Tests showed that propolis strongly inhibited the growth of human histolytic lymphoma U937 cells and macromolecular synthesis in a dose- and time- dependent manner. Propolis at 0.015-0.5 ul/ml showed antitumour activity with an IC50 of 0.18 ul/ml for 3 d. It also inhibits DNA, RNA and protein synthesis with an IC50 of 0.08, 0.17 and 4.3 ml/ml, respectively. These results suggest that the antitumour activity of propolis occurs through the induction of apoptosis. Propolis may be useful as a cancer chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agent.

Propolis pada 0,015-,5 / ml ßl menunjukkan aktivitas antitumor dengan IC50 0,18 / ml ßl selama 3 hari. Propolis juga menghambat DNA, RNA dan sintesis protein dengan IC50 0,08, 0,17 dan 4.3 ßl / ml. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa aktivitas antitumor propolis terjadi melalui induksi apoptosis. Propolis mungkin berguna sebagai agen chemopreventive (pencegahan kimiawi) dan kemoterapi untuk kanker.
